“MassDOT does not believe that the schedule for the viaduct project need result in a delay in the construction of a casino in Springfield,” Verseckes said in a statement. The project was delayed six months, state transportation spokesman Michael Verseckes said, because of project refinements. “The importance of the viaduct in connection with our project has always been out there, those two projects were overlapping for a long time, and now with the delay to the viaduct project, we feel like it’s appropriate to push out our opening date.” “Not only would it be devastating to our project, but I think it would be devastating to downtown Springfield,” said Michael Mathis, president of MGM Springfield. The construction will close lanes and exits in the immediate area of the $1 billion casino, increasing traffic, MGM said. MGM said the delays in a project designed to improve the Interstate 91 viaduct in Springfield would make it difficult to open as planned in September 2017. MGM Springfield is seeking a 12-month delay to open its resort casino, a move that would cost the state an estimated $125 million in revenue from the casino, but state transportation officials say they don’t think the postponement is necessary.
